On Gear Live: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review

Steve Carell If you find yourself wanting more of The Office and My Name is Earl, next season is for you. Both series have received a 25 episode (each) order, a bump up from the typical 22. Plus, five episodes of The Office will be hour long installments. I’ve really been enjoying those supersized episodes, so it’ll be nice to have a handful of full hour shows in the fall. Thursdays next season will remain intact—so expect My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, The Office and Scrubs to continue their comedy block. Thank heavens. Thursdays are my night for TV, if ever I had to proclaim one. I even instruct my kids that Thursday night bedtimes need to go smoothly because I have major TV viewing. And, now I can breathe a sigh that Scrubs will, in fact, be returning again (albeit for just 18 episodes, but I’ll take it!). For at least another year, Thursdays will be the funniest night on television.

Otherwise known as thoughts I’ve had about the last few days of TV that aren’t long enough individually to make an entire article…
WOO-HOO, THEY LOST! – I lamented the possibility of Charla and Mirna winning The Amazing Race: (not really) All Stars, and they didn’t.  They came in last (or third, really) and it was all…kinda lackluster.  I didn’t want C&M to win, and I wanted the Beauty Queens to win, but they didn’t either.  Eric & Danielle (aka, Team Not Charla & Mirna) won and their fakey relationship and the love between them will, I’m sure, flourish like a sunflower and I’m feeling underwhelmed.  Then again, I felt underwhelmed most of the season, so I guess this is a fitting finale.  By the way, Race Producers (and I know that you read all of my work), let’s try to make sure in the future that you not design the race legs so that the decisions made by the racers in the first thirty-five minutes of the episode don’t matter at all.  I know you want to keep things close, but that’s just annoying.
BEST OF?  REALLY, SNL?  REALLY?? – Saturday Night Live was not new this week, but instead had their best of the 2006/2007 season episode.  There are a couple of things wrong with this.  The first is that they still have a few more episodes left.  I’m not sure why they felt the need to jump the gun on this one, but maybe they were just tired of rerunning the Peyton Manning episode.  Just a tip, NBC: maybe you should wait until the season is over before you start doing a “Best Of” episode.  And this leads me to the other thing that’s wrong with this episode: just because you’ve chosen the best example of a recurring sketch, that doesn’t necessarily mean that what you’ve chosen is any good.  I know that a lot of people like to hate on SNL on the internet (I believe the phrase “Is this show still on?” is a common “joke” (ironic quotes firmly in place)), but I can’t fully hate the show yet because there are always funny moments every week, and that’s why God invented TiVo (that has to be invented by God, right?  Humans are not that good).  But, SNL, “Deep House Dish” and that Bronx talk show … they’re not funny.  Really not ever.  And I really like Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Keenan Thompson.  Those sketches, though, are just … ugh.  Oh, and finally, SNL went online to have people cast votes on what their favorite digital short of the year was (and maybe the whole episode should have just been digital shorts).  Did anybody really think “Dick in a Box” wouldn’t win?

My Name is Earl Here’s one of those clever little marketing campaigns that I can’t wait to see—during May sweeps, My Name is Earl will debut a feature called Laugh ‘n’ Sniff for the May 3rd episode. How do you take part in this revolutionary TV viewing experience? Look no further than your nearest issue of TV Guide during that week for a special scratch-and-sniff card. No word yet on what kind of scents viewers can anticipate sniffling in during the supersized episode, but Earl will be taking his first job at an appliance store. Also on tap for May sweeps at NBC are plenty of supersized Thursday night shows. Man, I love those extra long shows. Be on the lookout for Earl, The Office, and Scrubs extended episodes, as well as one-hour season finales of The Office and Scrubs on May 17th. May can’t come soon enough for me.

Steve CarellIf you watched last week’s episode of The Office called “The Negotiation,” you likely got a few laughs off of Michael Scott’s use of Wikipedia for his negotiating tactics. Wikipedia has become the go-to source for information, but most people take it with a grain of salt. Not clueless Michael Scott, who seemed to worship the knowledge site and rely heavily on its advice, saying, “Wikipedia is the best thing ever. Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject. So you know you are getting the best possible information.” So, with the exposure on The Office, you can bet that Wikipedia saw a jump in traffic—so much so that the site had to put the negotiation topic on lockdown after visitors started to add tactics that Michael Scott had talked about during the episode. “It’s definitely the result of that episode,” Wikipedia spokeswoman Sandra Ordonez said Thursday.

Ricky Gervais Here’s a bit of great news—Ricky Gervais, who created and starred in the original The Office is going to star along with Greg Kinnear in a romantic comedy titled Ghost Town. Oh man, do I ever love Ricky Gervais, and his recent news to pass on another season of Extras had me feeling downright glum. There’s a little pep in my step now though, because not only do I dig on Gervais, but I’m crazy about Kinnear too. I have been a diehard Kinnear fan since the old Talk Soup days on E! This is a supernatural type-y film, where one of them will play a dentist who dies while performing routine surgery, comes back and can see dead people. They probably drive him crazy to some comedic degree, demanding that the dentist help the dead folk get in touch with the living. Gervais has appeared in For Your Consideration, Night at the Museum and the upcoming film Stardust.

Ricky Gervais You’ll have to excuse me while I sniffle about this news. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant will not continue with a third season of their show Extras. You may recall that they made the same decision about their first show, The Office—they did, however, wrap up The Office by giving fans a special episode. History is repeating itself here, with Gervais and Merchant ending Extras after just two seasons and offering up a special. If you never saw this little gem, it’s well worth catching a re-run on HBO. The show stars Gervais as actor Andy Millman, with Merchant playing his clueless agent. No word on when the special will air, but hopefully it will bring in more big name celebs (past episodes included Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet, Orlando Bloom, and Daniel Radcliffe, to name a few).

NBC Logo Hey, as long as they’re both in the Thursday night lineup, it makes no difference what time they air. NBC announced that 30 Rock will be back sooner than planned—the original plan was to bump the comedy for a month to air Andy Barker, P.I., beginning this week. 30 Rock will instead be back on April 5th, as part of stellar night of super-sized episodes. Here’s where the shuffle goes down—on April 12th, 30 Rock will move to 9 p.m. and Scrubs moves to the 9:30 p.m. slot. 30 Rock will hold the 9:00 spot until its season finale on April 26. Then Scrubs goes back to the 9:00 time for a back-to-back showing on May 3rd. Got all that? A bit confusing, but shouldn’t cause too much damage for us fans of the Thursday night block. On April 5th, The Office will run 40 minutes, 30 Rock will begin at 8:40 and run 35 minutes, and Scrubs will run 35 minutes beginning at 9:15. Andy Barker will start at 9:50 (but will not be super-sized) and a repeat of My Name is Earl will show at 10:20. Clear your calendar for that night, folks… it’s gonna be a good one.

The Office Hey, reruns are a fact of television life—unless the show takes a major break (we’re looking at you Lost), you are bound to see some repeats on the tube. Never fear, The Office is about to bring you something extraordinary—a new and improved take on the repeat. Dubbed the “newpeat,” The Office will be reairing this season’s episodes with a twist. Two of the reruns will air on March 15th, but will include unaired scenes. Ta-da! A brand new viewing experience! The episodes are “Traveling Salesman” and “The Return.” “It’s about giving something extra to our wonderful fans,” said executive producer Greg Daniels. “Their loyalty must be rewarded somehow, and we don’t have the budget for 10 million muffin baskets.” No doubt this experiment will be a fun one for the fans. Count me among the many excited Office buffs who is looking forward to seeing the deleted scenes. Heck, I’d watch it again even if it wasn’t a newpeat! But wait, there’s more! Catch a special Office marathon on March 29th, featuring five episodes. And, for this very special event, none other than Office HR drone Toby will be hosting.

Rainn Wilson I just came across this online today—why am I always the last to know? Rainn Wilson, aka Dwight Schrute on The Office, will be hosting this weekend’s edition of Saturday Night Live. I’m thrilled. I’m ecstatic. Questions abound: Will there be a skit about The Office? Will Wilson be featured in a Digital Short (oh please?)? Will any of his Office co-workers make an appearance? I’m excited to see what he does—it’ll be fun to see him outside the word of Dwight Schrute. I know that SNL gets its fair share of criticisms, but I still think it’s worth tuning into, at least for the first half of the show. Even if there’s just one good sketch, it’s worth it. It’s always going to have ups and downs, but I’ve been watching since I was a kid and have no intention of giving up on it yet. Let’s hope that Lorne Michaels invites more Office cast members to host… come on, I would be so on board for John Krasinski (Jim) hosting. And while we’re suggesting dream SNL hosts, how about the creator of the british Office, Ricky Gervais? He would be a perfect match for SNL.

Survivor logo Hey, not too shabby for an aging franchise. The latest installment of SurvivorSurvivor: Fiji—earned almost 17 million viewers on its Thursday debut. This is the series’ fourteenth season, and it certainly doesn’t seem to be losing any steam. And this comes despite any new gimmicks (like the social experiment of last season). Survivor: Fiji took the top spot for 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. So, that means it beat out Ugly Betty by a fair amount—9% for households, 35% for viewers 25-54, 23% for 18-49 year-olds, and 17% total viewers. Similarly, it bested NBC’s showing of My Name is Earl and The Office, earning 35% more of the adults ages 18-49. Despite the significant viewership, it did fall short in one category: the 18-34 demographic, where it came in third, following Ugly Betty and Earl/The Office. I am one of the few who did not watch the latest installment. My loyalty lies with Earl and The Office, and quite frankly, I’ve grown tired of Survivor‘s concept and host.
